Top Five Weirdest Scholarships

Ellie Coulston, Online Writer

College is right around the corner for the seniors at Bowie and scholarships are here to help. If you think that you aren’t as academically or physically capable to get a scholarship to get a good scholarship, there are other options. You can choose from these examples of the weirdest scholarships, in my opinion, and get your way into college.

National Rice Month Scholarship-

“The National Rice Month Scholarship is open to graduating high school seniors who are from the rice-growing states of Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri or Texas. You must submit a video of no more than three minutes about U.S. rice, National Rice Month and the importance of rice to your state in order to be considered for this award. You can get up to $4,000 and is acceptable to any high school senior through college freshman.”

This scholarship is so weird to me because it is such a random topic and considering its award is not necessary considered low.

Tall Clubs International Scholarship-

“The Tall Clubs International Scholarship is available to freshmen students who are above average height (at least 5’10″ for women and at least 6’2″ for men).

In order to apply, you must contact your local TCI Member Club to request sponsorship. You must be under the age of 21 and entering your first year of college in order to qualify for this award. The award is $1,000 and is acceptable to College Freshmen; Maximum Age 21 Years.”

This scholarship is weird to me because it is your physical appearance and it is something that you can not help about yourself.

Jif Most Creative Sandwich Contest-

“Jif Peanut Butter holds the Jif Most Creative Sandwich Contest as a fun way to award students preparing to attend college. The award includes a scholarship worth $25,000, as well as a Jif Peanut Butter Basket worth $50.”

This is a weird scholarship because is is just so random, just like the first example of the Rice Month Scholarship.

The Wear Duct Tape to Prom Scholarship

“Duck Brand products holds an annual contest to see who can make the best Prom outfit from Duck Tape. The winners receive a $5,000 scholarship.”

This is another strange scholarship because you kinda waste your prom night in a dress made out of tape, and you still might not even come out getting the scholarship.

The Carnegie Mellon Bagpipe Scholarship-

“Lucky pipers planning on majoring in the bagpipes at Carnegie Mellon have it easy compared to other music majors, as there is usually only one applicant at a time for this scholarship. Some years, there haven’t been any at all.”

This isn’t even that strange of a scholarship considering that it is for an instrument, but the fact that it has it’s very own scholarship is amusing to me.
