With the track and field season coming to an end, The Bowie Dawgs have continued to excel in performance on the track. Varsity girls and boys won district this year stealing the show with countless athletes scoring in their events.

The Girls Varsity team celebrated their back to back victory over their rival Westlake, winning district two years in a row. With the countless amount of athletes who placed in District, many qualified to move on to Area.

“As a team I think we bonded early in the season which made our team stronger and closer,” junior Elise Foradory said.

The Dawgs did an excellent job overall at the Area Championships in Marble Falls, the girls coming in 3rd with a total of 71 points and the boys in 4th with 81 points.

“We ran good, almost broke the 4×400 relay record and had a great time,” senior Jaques Dixon.

Sophomore Keara McGraw really stole the spotlight with her versatility taking 1st place in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.43, 2nd place in Pole vault with a height of 10-00.00 and 3rd place in both Long and Triple Jump, resulting in her advancement to Area Championships.

After placing 2nd in pole vault at the Area Championships, McGraw secured her spot to compete in Regionals.

“This is my first year doing so many events. It was kind of hectic at first but I love the competition, had fun with it, and ended up getting farther than I expected,” sophomore Mcgraw said.

Due to the excellent performance from the Girls 4×200 and 4×400 relays, both teams were able to advance to Regionals held at Baylor University along with the boys 4×200 team as well as a few individual athletes competing in field events.

“I take track very seriously, so our advancement to Regionals was exciting and showed that our hard work as a team was really paying off,” junior Foradory said.

With the crazy competition that came with Regionals, many athletes competed to the best of their ability, setting personal records and school records. Long distance runner Marissa Flournoy broke the school’s record for the 2 mile race with a time of 11:20, beating a record set in 1994. Junior Carly Ott also did a superb job in High Jump, placing in 5th with a jump of 5’4.

“Placing in such high competition really motivated me to come back next year and take my place in State. I know I can do it and I can’t wait to see how far I get next year,” junior Ott said.

Though none of the Dawgs moved on to state, their performance exhibited hard work and dedication

“It’s been a pretty great season. We have a relatively young team so we can only get better,” coach Rita Gonzales said.
