The Star Wars Problem: The Force is Still Asleep

Mo Orr, Online Editor-In-Chief

In a galaxy far, far away… As soon as the crawl begins, the audience is hushed, and instantly every person sitting in the theater is brought back to the days of when they watched their favorite films. No matter who they are, every person who had watched these movies before have memories from their past brought back to them… and some are let down.

It’s true- the recent Star Wars trilogy isn’t for every fan. Only two of the three have been released so far, but controversy has been born of these recent installments. Some fans think it’s a good addition, others think it was just okay- and some others despise it. Some wish the approach to this new trilogy had been done differently, and I admit- I’m of that category.

The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi had some pretty different styles in terms of how they were directed. Pretty literally, as J.J. Abrams’ role as the director was turned to Rian Johnson between The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi. Through this review- I aim to look at what they both accomplished, and how that reflects on this lone fan.

The Force Awakens brought back a lot of the ideals and goals that the older Star Wars movies wished they could be. In fact, if the original movies were made today, I believe they’d follow a similar style in terms of visual effects, plot progression, etc. The movie set a good start for the trilogy, introducing new characters in a fundamental way, and it wasn’t really bad in my opinion. It wasn’t great, but it wasn’t horrible. The Force Awakens brings back the action and drama of the originals while The Last Jedi… doesn’t. And that’s certainly not a bad thing at all. But we’ll look into that soon…
