Valentine’s Day: Is it really that bad?

Ellie Coulston, Online Writer

Valentine’s Day. The day of love. When most people hear this day they cringe. They feel uncomfortable and depressed. But my heart gets overwhelmed with happiness. Not because I have a date- nor have I ever had a date- but because I love the idea of everyone having one day to celebrate their love for each other.

A day of love is so pure. Just a day full of appreciating the people around you and the people you care about is such an underrated thing. To make someone else feel special and loved is now, somehow, out of the ordinary; and Valentine’s day is a good excuse to change that. So many terrible things have happened in the last year and a half, and Valentine’s day is like a breath of fresh air. You get to give your heart a break from all the hatred and sadness and focus on all the good things you can experience.

Even if you are alone, you can have a good valentines day. You can go hang out with your friends and have a ‘Gal-entine’s day’.‘Gal-entine’s day’ is a day to do all the fun things you could do on a date, but with your friends instead. Or you can go out and buy yourself some chocolate, strawberries, or chocolate strawberries, and watch a movie by yourself. This is always shamed for some reason, but personally, I love chocolate and T.V., so why shouldn’t I stay in and watch it by myself?

I don’t feel bad because I am alone, I am actually content with being alone. I am enough for myself and I don’t need anyone else to make myself feel complete. This leads me to my next point. If you don’t feel good without a special someone, get up and get them yourself. They could be just as nervous as you, but you would never know because you never asked.

So far, I have only addressed my lonely readers, but the main reason of Valentine’s Day is to be with your significant other. You get the perfect day to simply love your boyfriend/girlfriend. You get the privilege of all the hearts, and the flowers, and the movie dates. Just make sure you bask in the love for the whole day, because the rest of us are jealous of you- whether we say it or not.

But, last but certainly not least, those cookies. Those amazingly wonderful cookies from any grocery store with the pink icing and the perfect everything. You either hate these cookies or love them, there is no in between. If you don’t know what I am talking about, go to your grocery store and get Lofthouse Sugar Cookies. But, not only the cookies, the day after Valentine’s all the chocolate and candy goes on discount and you can get all the good stuff- but cheaper.
