Friday the 13th- a debatable superstition

Mo Orr, Online Team Lead

Friday the 13th has always been a day that’s known for its unlucky nature- if it even has one. People often speculate whether or not strange happenings occur on the 13th, and Bowie’s no exception to those speculations.

Junior Lauren Stuart believes partially believes in superstition, and thinks the 13th- among other superstitious days, has some kind of effect.

“For the most part, I mean, I do believe something creepy something’s going down those days.” Stuart says.

However, teacher Kristen Cayer believes in circumstantial evidence, so while she believes in creatures of some sort, ‘unlucky’ days aren’t within her beliefs.

“I think it’s fun for me to believe in things like that, but I don’t know how much- truly deep down, I actually believe,” Cayer said. “I will say I love watching all of those [ghost hunting] shows,”

Rebecca Melnick however, doesn’t believe much of Friday the 13th supposed ‘superstition.’

“I passed that time in my life,” Melnick said. “I don’t know much about it, so I have nothing to be superstitious about,”

However, Melnick doesn’t lack any total superstition- Melnick’s mother suffers from spinal problems, which has caused immense pain for her back, leading her daughter to believe in the short rhyme: “step on a crack you break your mother’s back.”

“When I was younger I thought the whole “step on a crack you break your mother’s back” was true, because I didn’t know what actually happened to her back,” Melnick said. “Plus I liked to jump on the cracks when walking ‘cause i was a bored kid and whatnot. Now I don’t believe that because I know how the disk in her spine broke.”

Cayer hasn’t believed that Friday the 13th is unlucky, due to the positive connotations that she had grown up with.

“My parent’s anniversary is on a 13th so sometimes falls on Friday the 13th, so I’ve kinda always had a positive outlook on it.” Cayer said.
