National Suicide Month

National Suicide Month

Kaitlyn Zellner, Online Writer

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that each year approximately one million people die from suicide, which translates to one death every 40 seconds. Suicide is one of the most preventable deaths, if people know the warning signs, persuade people to get help, and know where to refer for help. Because numbers are hard to remember in a crisis, Mental Health America of Texas and the Texas Suicide Prevention Council urge people to program their cell phones to “save a number to save a life”. Every adult and high school student at Bowie should program their cell phones to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number: 1-800-273-TALK (8255). September is almost over, meaning national suicide month is coming to an end. Let’s use these last few days to pay our respects to those we’ve lost, and look out for those we haven’t. If you have ever experienced suicidal thoughts, or know of a friend/loved one going through a hard time we ask you to use the number and get help: 1-800-273 TALK (8255).
