Exchange student thrives on campus

Bowie has always been a multiracial school, but this isn’t the first time Bowie has seen Brazilian here before. Henrique Ferreria is an exchange student from São José dos Campos Brazil and he is loving Bowie already. This isn’t the first time Bowie has seen an exchange student from Brazil here before, since his two older brothers exchanged to Bowie a couple years ago, he knows it’s a great school.

“The school spirit and the whole football thing is pretty amazing.” Ferreria said. “Also the fact that you can choose your classes because I can’t choose mine in Brazil and the different options they give you considering other schools.”

Ferreria might love Austin and its community, but any person has to miss home.

“I miss the food in Brazil, the ‘Warmth’ of the people, and I miss my family, Ferreria said.

Ferreria’s old school, São Jose dos Campos Brazil, Is 5,000 miles away from Bowie and that’s a long way for an education.

“I came to Bowie because two of my three brothers had already gone here, so I did the same,” Ferreria said. “My last day at Anglo was June 30th and I moved here on September 9th and plan on going back to Anglo in the summer.”

Ferreria is currently staying with a family temporarily, or host family.

“My brother’s host family wanted to have me, but they weren’t able to for the first semester,” Ferreria said. “So my supposed-to-be host-mom and my brother’s American girlfriend came and talked to Mr. Ellerbrock and he found me the host family that I am currently with right now.”

A Bowie teacher, James Ellerbrock, knew Ferreria’s two brothers and had to help Ferreria with his adjustments to getting used to Bowie.

“Henrique did not struggle,” Ellerbrock said. “He adjusted fine because of his great personality and intelligence.”

In Bowie’s future there may be more exchange students who came from places farther than Ferrera.
