The sun rises as Bowie’s athletes step onto the newly paved track and field, the fresh surface stretching alongside the towering scoreboard. Spikes and cleats are thrown on as teams begin warming up on the upgraded facility.
Over the past couple of months, Bowie High School has undergone a major renovation to replace its worn-down track and field. The new facility features synthetic grass, stadium seats, lights, and a resurfaced track. However, while students have benefited from the upgraded track, the renovation process that was originally scheduled to begin in early 2024 under the Austin ISD 2022 Bond Program took over a year and a half to start due to many delays, resulting in the relocation of athletes’ practices. According to head track coach Laura Tilson, the construction period caused significant uncertainty and difficulty for athletes and coaches.
“Overseeing the process was difficult. Not knowing when we would have it, having to keep moving to different areas of campus while the construction was happening, and then just the anticipation for being allowed to use it,” Tilson said. “The construction has affected practices. At the start of the season, we had to travel to Burger and then travel back to Bowie. We thought we would have the track at the beginning of January, but it got pushed back to February, so planning was difficult.
Senior boys’ soccer captain Lennon Bres described a dramatic shift in practice as basic drills became more precise and intricate due to the smoother playing surface. With the ability to focus more on quick passing, dribbling, and shooting, the team finished out the season as 3rd in the district with an overall record of 15-5-3.
“Simply having flat ground is everything. Before, we struggled with armadillos making holes that disrupted the ball and caused rolled ankles, but now we have a perfect playing surface to practice on safely,” Bres said. “The speed of play in everything from simple passing to scrimmages is so apparent that it took us a few weeks to get used to the new level of play.”
In addition to contributing towards improved training and competition results, the new facility has also created a positive atmosphere. At the Charles Austin High School Classical Varsity Only 2026 meet, senior track captain Mia McAulay ran a 5:31 mile and noted that the facilities contributed to her and her team’s performance because they felt more comfortable when racing.
“I think this track will push people to work harder and show up because it is so much better quality, which helps with the quality of workouts too,” McAulay said. “I think it motivates us to work harder because we are on a much nicer track than a lot of people have, which kind of puts us at an advantage to work harder towards our goals.
As reported by the Synthetic Turf Council, turf is beneficial to athletes because it is environmentally friendly, less expensive than grass, and built to last. That is why Bres believes the upgraded track and field will continue to help Bowie’s athletic programs for years to come.
“It gives me hope that Bowie soccer, which has grown into one of the best soccer programs in the state, will continue to grow more and more, and our poor practice facility will no longer hold us back,” Bres said. “I’m just thankful that we now have such great facilities. It’s a shame that I’m leaving, but I’m thankful for my short time on it.”
