With over three million released pages of the Epstein files, consisting of thousands of videos and pictures, more and more horrific
truths are coming to light about celebrities and politicians that we once adored and trusted. Jeffery Epstein was an American financier and later found to be a child sex offender after it was discovered that he had been paying a minor for inappropriate acts.
In 2019, he was arrested for sex trafficking after the media discovered that he owned Little Saint James, also known as Epstein Island, where he and numerous other public figures frequently brought underage girls to be assaulted. Soon after his arrest, he allegedly committed suicide in his prison cell. According to USA Today, Epstein had about 1,000 victims.
This is obviously a horrific situation that should never have happened in the first place, so where is the outrage? There are not enough people talking about the severity of the files, and all of the disgusting things in it. People only cared because it was on their For You Page for a week and have now moved on to something else now that people aren’t posting about it. If politicians and celebrities are able to get away with something as awful and sickening as this, what will they be able to get away with in the future?
After the files were released, it became apparent that numerous names throughout the files were redacted. Though most of these were names of victims and are meant to protect them, according to Aljazeera, United States Congressman, Ro Khanna, was able to identify six redacted names, all of them being grown men who were not victims of Epstein, but rather perpetrators of the crime.
This raises a serious concern on how many more names of corrupt figures could be protected for no good reason. Allowing these names to be redacted is allowing their crimes to go without recognition or punishment.
Another issue stems from the fact that many people continue to support the celebrities who we know were in the Epstein Files. According to Komo News, a few of the names in the files that people seem to ignore include Elon Musk, Donald Trump, Mick Jagger, and Diana Ross. The fact that many people do not think these celebrities and politicians’ involvement in the files is a big deal, is incredibly concerning and disgusting.
Since they are big figures with a lot of public support, this will push victims into thinking they shouldn’t share their side of the story. This is due to the fact that fans of these celebrities continue to support them despite knowing what they are capable of.
Not only does this stop the predators from getting what they deserve, but it also causes additional trauma and stress for the victims. They should not be able to get away with their crimes just because of their social status.
Additionally, it doesn’t help when the leaders of our country are diminishing the severity of this situation by calling it a “Democratic hoax.” That quote comes from our very own president, Donald Trump. Since we now know Trump was in the files, it makes sense why he would disregard the solid proof of the crimes. However, it is extremely harmful to hear from a high profile person in our government that the sexual assault of hundreds over girls over several years with thousands of photos and videos of proof is a joke set up by the opposing political party. Due to his high position, many people will believe his words without doing any research of their own, which is important to understand just how bad the Epstein Files actually are.
Many people think that the Epstein Files are just a cover up for the more serious events going on in the world right now such as the war in Iran and other systemic issues. This is just simply just not true, and Epstein’s crimes have been an ongoing issue for years so it is important they are addressed now that we are learning more of the full story. While it is important that we pay attention to these other issues as well, they should not be used to lower the gravity of the Epstein Files since they are all serious and sensitive situations.
In this age of modern media, when people are getting information faster and easier than ever, we need to make an effort to prevent ourselves from becoming desensitized to issues that we feel don’t affect us personally. This is an ongoing problem that is affecting numerous social issues, not just the Epstein Files.
Instead of asking why you should care about an issue that doesn’t directly affect you, educate yourself to learn the full story, and learn how it could be affecting more people than you think. In fact, calling the Epstein Files a distraction is just diminishing the trauma of the victims who had their entire life derailed by people who think their status is an excuse to commit heinous offenses.
We should be outraged that those who have the power to expose the offenders who committed these awful crimes aren’t doing it and are letting them get away with it. More people need to talk about the Epstein Files and demand that justice is delivered to the victims who have been affected by this situation.
