The way Bowie’s schedule works has been a topic of discussion among students since they first arrived as a freshman at the school. The way Bowie does their schedule is called block scheduling. Block schedules are a system that has students go to four out of their eight total classes each day with an hour and a half for each class. This is a controversial scheduling choice, as many people feel that students should go to all eight classes each day instead.
I think that block scheduling has its positives and negatives which impact Bowie students. I personally believe block schedules are the right scheduling choice.
I believe block schedules play an important role in making sure that students are able to succeed. This is especially important for students who take advanced classes that might have an impact on their future.
The first reason I believe that block schedules are beneficial is because they allow for more time in each class. This is important as students start to take higher level classes that require either faster paced or more in-depth material. These longer class periods allow for teachers to teach the material without any interruptions.
Looking from the students’ side of it, block schedules can be very helpful in terms of homework. It gives students more time to complete their homework as the classes are every other day. This is beneficial for the majority of students who have more to balance than just school work.
For students who participate in UIL events, block scheduling can help them too. Many UIL events have class periods that are used for practices or meetings of some sort. If those class periods were cut short it would make it much harder for students to have an effective practice or meeting. For the athletes, it might also make it hard to get ready and make it back to class on time.
Although there are many benefits to block schedules there are also disadvantages, the main one that I hear a lot from other students and friends is that sometimes it is hard to remember what classes you have each day.
While I agree with this statement. The school does provide resources to conquer this problem. On Bowie’s website there is a calendar that says if each day is an A or a B day.
While the calendar is a very helpful resource there are other ways to find out the schedule. If for some reason the calendar is confusing or inaccessible then there are many staff members to ask, or even just a friend.
Block Schedules are very helpful for school, but especially for high school. Block schedules not only help and are beneficial to students, but also to the teachers and staff. Overall, I think that Bowie’s schedule is doing its job and doesn’t need to be changed.
