Even though senioritis has fully kicked in, and I’ve procrastinated writing this letter until the very last minute, it still feels hard to believe that my high school journey is coming to a close and I’ll be moving on to a new chapter of my life. High school has definitely had its ups and downs, but I can confidently say that every challenge I’ve overcome these past few years has helped prepare me for what comes next. I’ve learned so much throughout my time at Bowie, and I’m so grateful to all my teachers who put in so much time and effort to provide me with a truly well-rounded education. I would specifically like to thank Mr. Pfeiffer, Mrs. Hejny, and Profesora Mitchell. In addition to all of the academic experience I’ve gained in your classes, you have all taught me to think deeply and consciously about the world and my place in it. I’m thankful to have had the guidance of your support and wisdom these past years.
When I joined J-1 in my freshman year, my experience with journalism was limited. In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, I started paying more attention to current events, and realized how empowering it was to be informed about key issues. I went into this class not knowing what to expect, but after four years in the program, I’m confident in my ability to research and develop opinions and use my writing to share my perspectives with others. My time on newspaper staff has been so valuable to me because it has allowed me to connect with the broader Bowie community in a way that I otherwise wouldn’t be able to, through voicing my ideas. This program has ultimately helped me discover a passion I didn’t even know I had, and has taught me so much about the importance of exchanging viewpoints and speaking up for what you believe in.
To my family, I can’t thank you enough for all of the love and encouragement you have given me these past four years. High school may not have been a walk in the park, but I can always count on you to remind me of what’s important when things get hard. You always know just the right thing to say, and I could not have gotten here without your endless support.
Reeves, you have pushed me to always put forth my best work and become a stronger writer. You set high expectations for your students, and I truly believe that this has allowed me to achieve my full potential as a student journalist. Although it’s not always easy, I’ve gained so much from being part of a student-run newspaper. Not only have I gotten to share my ideas and work on content that I truly care about, but I’ve also learned the importance of taking initiative and being assertive. Thank you so much for all of the trust and belief that you instill in your students.
To the EiCs, know that your hard work and dedication does not go unnoticed. You have put in countless hours each issue to ensure that each new paper we print is the best one yet. From taking on an additional load so we can make deadline, to checking in when staff members need support, to bringing treats on Fridays, all three of you do so much to make sure this program runs smoothly. Thank you Bella, Liberty, and Elizabeth for making this such a welcoming community and leading The Dispatch to success this past year!
To my co-Commentary Editor and future Editorial Writer, Sam, it has been a joy getting to work alongside you this year! You are so dedicated and such a talented writer. Even though it’s easy to get overwhelmed with the pressure of deadlines, amidst the periodic crashing out, you write consistently engaging stories because you truly care about what you do. I know the editorial is going to be in good hands.
To the Dispatch Staff, thank you all for bringing your unique contributions to help create this community of passionate, hard-working journalists. You all have shown me the value of collaboration and inspired me to always put in my best effort. I’m so grateful that I’ve gotten to be a part of this incredible staff, and can’t wait to see all that The Dispatch continues to accomplish in the future!
