From design to stitching, to metalwork, to running, junior Sam Munger watches his projects and goals come to life as he creates unique and stylish clothing pieces.
For the past year, Munger has created a variety of styles and types of clothing.
“I started making clothing last summer,” Munger said. “One of my friends asked me to turn his shirt into a pair of shorts, and I said sure, why not.”
After this, Munger continued to create clothing after making a pair of shorts for his friend.
“It’s a mixture between ingenuity and having a short frame,” Munger said. “I’m a short person, and I don’t want to spend money on certain clothes. I am motivated by making myself look better.”
He also continued making clothing due to problems he experienced with the fashion industry.
“As far as fashion designing, I am relatively amateur,” Munger said. “I use what I have for clothing, and I add to them.”
Munger is still relatively new to making clothing, and he finds inspiration from many different styles and cultures.
“I love western wear,” Munger said. “I’ve always had a fascination with the West and cowboy culture.”
Munger’s fascination with western wear has become part of his style now.. Munger creates clothing using a variety of different methods, many taking longer than others.
“It can be deceiving how long these things can take,” Munger said. “My first pair of jeans took me four hours.”
Munger balances his clothing line with keeping up in school and his grades.
“It’s almost like grades are controlling,” Munger said. “It’s hard to set aside time to design.”
Engineering teacher Dustin Junk is one of Munger’s teachers and has nothing but positive things to say about him.
“Teaching Sam is great,” Junk said. “He’s always looking to dig deeper into projects and concepts.”
Munger has upcoming projects he is working on himself.
“I know he has a clothing brand,” Junk said. “He’s working on a backpack for my class that’s stunning.”
Junk loves watching Munger work on his designs for class and outside of class.
“I’m really proud of the work Sam puts into his projects,” Junk said. “He’s constantly innovating in his engineering designs, as well as his own projects.”
Along with school and his clothing line, he also runs for the track and field team.
“I want to use running as a way to get into college,” Munger said. “Then industrial design, where making clothing is part of design to help as well.”
Current sophomore Cooper Ford met Munger at the beginning of Ford’s freshman year.
“I first met Sam through cross country and track and field,” Ford said. “We met at the first cross country race my freshman year.”
Ford thinks very highly of Munger and his hard work in school and on other projects outside of school.
“He is very creative,” Ford said. “Whether that be him drawing or even making clothing.”
Munger continues to create clothing, but he does more design work than many people think.
“I do more than create clothing,” Munger said. “It’s leather work, metal work, and art of all kinds.”
Munger wants to use his creations and sports as a way to help himself get into college and help him throughout college.
“I want to use running as a way to get into college,” Munger said. “Also, industrial design, where making clothing is part of design.”
Munger has many projects and designs he wants to achieve as time goes on.
“I hope to make a jacket,” Munger said. “I got a suit form for my birthday, so it’s gonna happen soon.”
Along with Munger’s current projects, he plans to continue his clothing and art business.
“I also want to make clothing that people will buy,” Munger said. “or, people will just buy my art and I will create what I want.”
