Spanish Heritage Door decorations

Throughout the years, people of Hispanic heritage have celebrated the successes of their ancestors and family members by paying their respects through one month every year. From September 15 to October 15 many people from all over the Americas (North and South) have celebrated their Hispanic and Latin American ancestors and how they helped build the civilization we have today.

“The diversity of the cultures that Hispanic Heritage brings to America is so unique and diverse. It is a good time to pay respects to those who had Hispanic and Latin American ancestors that helped shape the Americas.” Bowie teacher Amanda Walsh said.

The officers in the Spanish Honors society came up with the idea to design and make door decorations for as many classroom doors as they could. They worked hard to spread the image of many Bowie students’ ancestors and enlighten people who don’t have that heritage.

“We just wanted to spread the joy and festivities to everyone we could,” Walsh said.

Hispanic Heritage Month starts on September 15th and is celebrated through October 15th. In this month other important dates are celebrated. Mexico kicks off the month by celebrating its independence day on September 16th and Chile on September 18th. And to end the month, Columbus day, also known as “Dia de la Raza” is on October 12th.

“It’s an opportunity to acknowledge Hispanic heritage and how [it] changed America’s history and society for the better,” Walsh said.

Even though the month is over now, the door decorations are still up and people everywhere around the world are paying their respects to their ancestors who helped to shape America into what it is now.
