Freshman Soccer Summer Camp
June 2, 2018
Coach Carrie Hoffman-Howell and Coach Ryan Logan host a soccer camp for incoming freshman. This summer the camp will be held at the Austin Sports Academy from June 4 to June 7. The coaches hold this camp hoping to introduce the boys and girls to the Bowie Soccer program and help them develop individual skills and to give them an advantage during tryouts.
“I think the players that attend the camp have an advantage over the kids that do not; one they will be more comfortable in the drills, two, if they have a bad day in tryouts the coaches have already seen the players and have an ideal on their ability,” Logan said.
Coach Hoffman-Howell has been doing this camp for fifteen years now and she’s always encouraged to want to come back the next summer to help.
“I have been doing the soccer camp since 2004. The thing that makes me want to continue doing the camp is getting to meet the incoming freshman and also the fact that I’m teaching them highly beneficial,” Hoffman-Howell said.
The campers learn many things that they will use then they have tryouts.
“It is helpful for the girls planning on playing soccer when they come to Bowie because they can get to know the coaches and learn many drills that they will have to perform during tryouts and at practices,” Hoffman-Howell said.
Attending the camp is a great opportunity for coaches to see how a camper plays.
“The real advantage is for the Coaches to already have information on the skill level of the players that will be trying out,” Logan said.
Many attend this camp in search of help in soccer skills which is a goal for the coaches.
“In the camp the players will learn a number of different drills we do here at Bowie and the formations we play,” Logan said.
Campers who are looking to make it onto the freshman team should attend the camp because it would highly benefit them.
“Soccer does not have a freshman class period and we have tryouts the first week of season and only have a couple of weeks before scrimmages start we do not have much time to spend with the freshman soccer team,” Logan said.
Think no more and attend the soccer camp to help break down the nerves about tryouts.
“I think the players that attend the camp have an advantage over the kids that did not, that really helps relieve some pressure going into tryouts with that knowledge,” Hoffman-Howell said.
