Earth Club
September 26, 2017
Earth Club is one of the many after school groups to join and participate in at Bowie.
Earth Club has a few key points and goals for the year, such as helping keep Bowie’s campus clean and litter-free, keeping up with a few plants that they plan on growing and nurturing, and also volunteering for environmentally beneficial programs and activities around Austin. The club has over a dozen members, some who were in the club previously and joined again this year, and others that are looking to be a part of the team after finding out about the group on Club Day. The club’s sponsor is Ms. Spiro, and it’s two co-presidents are Morgan Scrimgeour and Maddy Swor.
When asked about what might be some of Earth Club’s plans for the year, one of the co-presidents, Morgan Scrimgeour said, “We plan to clean up the campus, make it look nice, and actually recycle, because Bowie doesn’t seem to do that enough yet.”
Many of the previous and new club members are excited about the future of club, and the activities planned to help the environment around them. I asked a few of the older club members why they decided to join the club again this year, and Asia Vo commented, “The community is nice and Earth club gives off a chill, familial vibe and I’m into that.” While Marisa Coronado said, “I came back because I knew I needed to go. I knew I needed to spend some time and relax and just have fun. I had so much fun the past year that I needed to come back.”
After attending a few of the club meetings, one of the newer members, Trace Osborn said, “The people leading it [the club] are pretty welcoming.”
On September 27th, a club meeting day, it was pouring rain and that lead to many of Earth Club’s plans to be cancelled, but the group still managed to be productive and have fun by cleaning their greenhouse and even taking breaks to dance around in the rain. Clubs can bring students together and help them to have fun and be at ease in a productive way after a long day of school, and can be beneficial to many other ways.
