“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” Review
May 6, 2017
The “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” is a Netflix Original that was released in 2015 with two popular seasons of comedy and a positive message..
Humor in “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” is based around controversial topics in today’s news, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who is easily offended.
The show revolves around Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) and her journey to navigate the modern world after being trapped in a bunker with four other girls. At 14, Kimmy was tricked by Rev. Richard (Jon Hamm) into believing the world was ending.
Richard tricked Kimmy, Cyndee (Sara Chase), Donna (Sol Miranda), and Gretchen (Lauren Adams) into taking refuge in an underground bunker. Fifteen years later, police have finally found them and the four girls become nationally famous and known as “The Mole Women.”
Kimmy decides to stay in New York and start her new life there while the others go back to their hometown in Indiana.
While Kimmy explores New York, she finds an apartment owned by Lillian (Carol Kane) who offers Kimmy to room with a gay roommate known as Titus (Tituss Burgess). However, if she wants to roommate with Titus, she has to find a job to help pay the rent.
Kimmy goes searching for a job and ends up becoming a personal assistant/nanny for Jacqueline (Jane Krakowski) who is one of the richest wives in New York. She moves in and begins her new life with the guidance of Titus, Lillian, and Jacqueline.
She later meets an immigrant from Asia named Dong (Ki Hong Lee) that tutors her and Dong soon becomes a love interest for Kimmy.
This show is a quick pick-me-up for a gloomy day. The color scheme of the show is bright and happy colors. Kimmy is always wearing a bright color with a cardigan, Titus is always wearing something to show off his sassy personality and Jacqueline is wearing something to show off her social status in New York.
I give this show a 9 out of 10 stars because I wish there was more character development for Lillian. Lillian is a static character that is mostly there as a supporting character and another source of humor.
Other than Lillian, all of the characters have a great development over the course of the series. Jacqueline’s change is definitely the most interesting change because you see her change from posh and selfish to more down to earth and isn’t as naive. Titus starts to become more interested in following his dreams, and Kimmy becomes more familiar with her surroundings.
Kimmy has a carefree attitude that will make anyone smile. The show has an optimistic theme to it that will brighten anyones day. And the characters throw the idea of equality through inspiration, hard work and humor.
