New English teacher surprises students

Whispers fill the air as an unfamiliar face walks into the classroom, yet this time it’s a teacher, and his name is Blake Wilson. Wilson is taking over Henry Bostwick’s former classes of English I and Pre-AP English II.

But Wilson was a student not too long ago at Texas State University, where he graduated in December of 2016. While most recent college students work on perfecting their job resumes, Wilson had to quickly start preparing lesson plans.

“It was nice to not worry about what I was going to do for an entire semester without work,” Wilson said. “I was very fortunate to get a call from Bowie.”

His arrival has gone smoothly so far with the friendly faces encompassing Bowie.

“From top to bottom-the Bowie faculty has been welcoming and very supportive of my transition from college to leading my own classroom,” Wilson said.

Students are fond of Wilson and say that he stands out among their other teachers.

“At first I wasn’t sure if Mr. Wilson was going to be a good teacher because he is so young,” sophomore Callie Richards said. “But so far, I’ve been impressed.”

Wilson enjoys the school atmosphere and working along adolescents, which adds up to him becoming an educator.

“I like kids, whether it’s with school or academic work or simply life in general. My goal is to help them grow into better people,” Wilson said.

Wilson’s friendly motivation pushes students without draining their energy.

“He’s always telling us to try our best and emphasizing that it’s the most important part of class,” sophomore Jordan Haschke said.

Nevertheless, not only does a passion for teaching lie deep within him, but there’s a reason he chose to educate the subject of English.

“I chose English because it’s more abstract in thinking,” Wilson said. ”It allows for a deeper thought process and students get to unleash their creativity.”

Surprisingly Wilson’s inspiration to teach did not necessarily come from any of his teachers.

“I had baseball coaches in both high school and college that inspired me to become a better person,” Wilson said. “They inspired me to help others to the point where they laid down the foundation for my career choice of becoming a teacher.”

A quality students appreciate about Wilson is his ability to relate.

“I think the fact that he just came from college and is on the same level of understanding as us towards school and how stressful it is makes him unique,” Richards said.

Students claim he brings a fresh vibe to the classroom.

“He’s very chill and a lot more lenient on due dates,” Richards said. “I feel like I can take a breather in his class, but still learn a lot.”

Although for Wilson, teaching by the books is not the only part of his job and goal as a teacher.

Wilson said, “My main goal and aspiration is to help students grow into better people.”
