Ever since it started to gain traction in the early 2020s, Laufey’s music has been praised by men and women alike, with her smooth singing and her jazzy, bossa nova melodies, she’s bewitched audiences.
Listening to her second single teasing the album, “Lovergirl”, I immediately enjoyed it.
What’s interesting about this album, and what it has in common with her other 2 studio albums, is the fact that it doesn’t have a set tempo or mood. Prior to playing A Matter Of Time, I listened to those other 2 studio albums: “Everything I Know About Love” & “Bewitched.” A Matter Of Time’s opening track is “Snow White” (which frankly, I wasn’t a huge fan of), and then the speed changes entirely with “Lovergirl.”
People who think all of Laufey’s albums sound the same aren’t entirely true in this statement. Granted, some tracks sound relatively similar, but the overall tone of each album is entirely different. “Everything I Know About Love” sounded very orchestral, while “Bewitched”, the second album in her discography, sounded almost like a post-Big band record from the 1950s, specifically with her first song on the album: “Dreamer.” It was very reminiscent of Julie London, whose song “I’m In The Mood For Love”, along with Billie Holiday’s song “Solitude” have openings that sound suspiciously similar to Laufey’s song “Valentine.”
But her newest album,” A Matter of Time” was a good album in my opinion. I think it’s probably my second favorite album of hers, maybe even tied for first. Some of my favorite songs on this album were “Silver Lining” and “Mr. Eclectic,” with the lovely bonus track “Seems Like Old Times” bringing this wonderful, jazzy album to a close.
In short, Laufey’s wide range of tone and melodies in her music makes it easy to be enjoyed by everyone. Jazz is a wonderful form of music that has been adored by the masses for decades, and Laufey is making sure that won’t be stopping anytime soon.
