The third and final season of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” returned on Prime video July 16 of this year. The episodes were dropped weekly on Wednesdays, and the finale of the show aired on September 17.
This season picks up four years later with Belly, the main character, as a junior in college. The start of this season shows Belly thriving in college. She is dating the supposed love of her life, Jeremiah, and she has just been offered to study abroad in Paris, which is one of her lifelong dreams. However, things start to get more and more chaotic after Belly finds out Jeremiah cheated on her(although he claims they were on a break). In a crazy turn of events, 2 days later, Jeremiah proposes, and she says yes. This obviously raises some tension for the whole family, and especially for her first love and her fiancé’s brother, Conrad. After a dramatic and heartbreaking breakup between Belly and Conrad in season two, season three shows him in a better place: he’s studying to be a doctor, he’s going to therapy, and living a good life in California, although he still has unresolved feelings for Belly.
As the summer progresses, so does the tension between Belly and her Mom, Laurel, who are fighting because Laurel disapproves of the wedding and refuses to be a part of it. Jeremiah’s Dad, Adam, also disapproves, and in a plea to win his approval, Jeremiah interns at his dad’s company. One weekend, Belly and Jeremiah decide to stay in the summerhouse, which is where both of their families stay every summer, only to discover Conrad is also there, and as Conrad and Belly spend more time together, she starts realizing she might also have unresolved feelings for Conrad.
My sister and I have been fans of this show since season one, and we have really enjoyed this season. This season has been very emotional. It has shown how the characters have evolved and matured. One of my favorite parts about this season is the soundtrack; every single song in this season has been on point. My favorite songs that have been played were Mystery of Love by Sufjan Stevens and Cardigan by Taylor Swift.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this show. Over the last 3 years, it has been so fun to look forward to Wednesday watch parties and bonding over being Team Conrad with my sister, and I am sad that I won’t get to look forward to it next summer. Although some might say it is just a silly romance show for teen girls, I think of it as so much more than that, and it has taught me lessons about grief, love, and the importance of family. I am so grateful that I have gotten to watch this show over the past few years.
