Artificial Intelligence (AI) in schools has become a big problem. Many schools have banned AI. Some students find that annoying, and some students are fine with it. Many people see using AI in any case as cheating. In many cases it is, but is it always cheating?
I think that AI is okay for use in some classes, but not for every class. For a class like math or english, it’s not okay, but for classes like science or history I think it’s fine. Classes where you need to know facts over skills shouldn’t be denied AI, as it serves as a search engine more than a peer completing an assignment for you.
When I say this, it might sound like I’m saying that you should just use AI and never think for yourself, but that is not what I am saying. While I think that AI is a useful tool, you shouldn’t only use AI, but if there is a question or two on an assignment you’re not sure about, it shouldn’t be wrong to ask AI.
If I’m doing my history homework and there is an answer that I don’t know, using AI should be fine. What’s the moral difference between searching through my notes for a while or typing something and immediately getting the answer if it’s a class that doesn’t require a method or formula.
Another reason for my advocacy on AI is that not all teachers can’t equally teach their students. Every teacher has their own teaching style, and that’s normal. But not all students learn from the same style. I’ve had classes where I’ve taught myself because I just can’t learn from my teacher. And AI can be part of a solution for this problem.
Although, AI is still a fairly new topic so if the points I’ve made are convincing, just remember that sometimes AI can be wrong, although it is rare. I still take a strong stance with my opinion, but this is a small issue that needs to be addressed. This goes back to my point about how it’s okay if limited.
Many people say that using AI means you’re not learning. What’s the difference between learning the function of a cell from my science teacher or learning the function of a cell from AI? The only difference is learning from a human, which is something important but not needed, at least for me.
There is a solution for this whole AI craze. Just allow students to use AI in certain circumstances. Similar to how I said that my history homework may have a question that I don’t know, if the AI can explain it, what’s wrong?
Overall, AI should be allowed in some classes, but others should stay free from AI. Because sometimes you don’t feel like going to your notes and searching for a while when you have an AI program a few clicks away.
