What is a new year’s resolution? Well, some people may consider it to be a small goal such as an attempt to learn a new skill or to trying to get a better grade in a class that they had previously struggled in. However, others could consider resolutions to be much more unrealistic goals, such as losing a lot of weight in a short period of time, or to try to better their diet.
Every New Year, almost half of the American population participate in New Year’s Resolutions. While this number seems large, only about twenty-five percent of that population stay committed to their resolutions.
“I feel like New Year’s resolutions are kind of useless,” junior Aviv Abramovitch said. “A lot of people set goals that they are not able to reach and then they end up feeling guilty or upset about it.”
A lot of people think that New Year’s resolutions are just small little goals that are relatively easy to complete. Although that can be true, in reality it can be a lot more than that. New Year’s resolutions have to be something that will be worked for. For example, if someone was trying to lose weight for their New Year’s resolution, it isn’t just given to them. They have to workout, change their diet and they have to really want to be able to lose weight. New Year’s resolutions have to do with more self-discipline and motivation more than anything else.
Out of the millions of people that participate in new year’s resolutions, only 9% actually follow through with it and accomplish their goal.
“I feel like new years resolutions can be good because it is a good way to discipline yourself and keep track of your goals overall,” sophomore Alexa Artigas said. “My New Year’s resolution was to stay more organized, and I have continued to work on it and it has been very helpful with keeping me less stressed and it has also helped my grades a lot.”
People don’t seem to realize that such a small goal can really change their day to day living. A New Year’s resolution does not have to be something big. People who participate in New Year’s resolutions should start from a small goal and build up as they go. Although New Year’s resolutions can be difficult to achieve, they are definitely possible.
