Everyday, hundreds of Bowie students struggle with finding a comfortable place to sit for lunch. From a full cafeteria to filled up picnic tables, there is a lack of seating for lunch time at Bowie.
More seating both outside and inside should be added to accommodate for the lack of places to sit during lunch. Since there are only two lunches and a large number of students at Bowie, most people find themselves sitting on the floor or alternate forms of seating that aren’t allowed.
A large number of students at Bowie resort to sitting on the floor. This is problematic for multiple reasons, but a big one being that the floor is very dirty. With students eating in the hallways where people walk everyday, they run the risk of collecting germs and even possibly getting sick. Most people do not enjoy eating their lunch on the floor and would rather have a table to sit at.
Another solution that people resort to is going off-campus for lunch. Though this is not a problem for seniors, many people from different grades are also doing this. Giving students more accessible and comfortable seating will be able to prevent underclassmen from leaving campus when they have somewhere to sit.
Similar to going off-campus, numerous students will choose to sit in their car during lunch. Though most people end up getting in trouble from administration, and have to go back inside anyways. Additionally, enough people sitting in their car for a prolonged amount of time with it running can cause a buildup of carbon monoxide which can be extremely harmful.
Some might think there is plenty of seating both in the cafeteria outside, but there have been numerous times where I or others I know have had to resort to sitting on the floor after walking around the entire campus looking for somewhere to sit. While there may have been small tables open, oftentimes it is not enough to sit entire groups of people.
This can be solved by simply adding more seating both inside and outside. Adding tables to places like the cafeteria, lounge in the fine arts building, and more tables outside will give more people somewhere to sit.
To help alleviate the issue of a shortage of seating, more options for seating around campus should be added. The lack of seating at Bowie should be fixed not only to promote student’s comfortability but also potentially wellbeing.
