Last Thursday night, the Bowie Bulldawgs took on the Akins Eagles at Burger Stadium. The ‘Dawgs got off to a fiery start leading 13-0 after the first quarter, behind two passing touchdowns by senior quarterback Cruz Tello. Senior linebacker Wyatt Barnes stifled the Akins offense with 4 solo tackles in the first quarter, which ended up leading to zero first downs all quarter.

“The first half went really well,” Barnes said. “Cruz did a really good job making good decisions and our defense was pretty solid. Everyone played their part.”

The ‘Dawgs continued their game dominance stretching the lead to 27-0 at half, and later closing out the Eagles during the second half of the game winning 48-0 as their second team got some repetitions.

“Getting the starters pulled at halftime was really big for the team,” Barnes said. “Some of the younger guys got a lot of good experience, and those on the team that usually don’t play made some really impressive calls. It was also really important because we got to rest up which helped prevent any of the first team from getting injured.”

This was senior night for the ‘Dawgs, meaning, parents and family members filled the stands to watch the seniors play their final games. Senior football players, dancers, and band members walked across the field at the start of the night to be recognized for their years of work. Senior Corner Dustin Fahrenthold had his two brothers and his dad come out to witness the emotional night.

“It was pretty surreal playing on Senior night,” Fahrenthold said. “You see the videos on Instagram and you know it’s going to be an emotional moment, but yeah it was a crazy experience. I think all the seniors just wanted to focus on winning the game and putting our team in a good position. I think with it being senior night, it just provided extra motivation to make it more special.”
