Are you ever looking for that perfect shot of energy to help you throughout the day, but you just can’t find the right place? Well, I am here to help you quench that yearning for the perfect coffee drink. Cosmic Coffee has two locations in Austin with one located in South Congress, and the other in East Austin. Both locations offer the same coffee menu with copious options that can aid to your needs, but different sights of scenery. The South Congress location has more of a natural environmental feel, and the East Austin location has a swanky beautiful touch that you have to check out.
The first ever Cosmic Coffee was opened in 2017 on Pickle Road, in South Congress by Paul Oveisi and Patrick Dean. Their goal was to bring a comforting and inviting coffee location to relax and take a load off while being a sustainably-driven establishment for locals. They are proud of their accomplishment of preserving nature in this area by creating an oasis. In this location, they also offer a variety of food trucks that are on the property. This includes trucks with a variety of culinary options including Mexican, BBQ, and Wings. To wash down the food, Cosmic Coffee offers Coffee, but also Chai, Hot Chocolate, Hot Tea, Iced Tea, Watermelon Cucumber Fresca, Lemonade, Frozen Guava Limeade, and a seasonal drink, which is currently Black + White Peppermint Mocha (hot or iced), and a variety of alcoholic drinks.
This is one of my favorite coffee locations to visit in Austin due to the delicious coffee, tasty food, and atmosphere. There are many different places to sit including indoor seating, picnic tables, high-top tables, regular chairs, etc. Not only can you sit and enjoy the scenery, but it is relatively quiet where you can focus on your homework with minimal distractions. But, you can also take your friends or significant other for a fun date. The music is not too loud but just right, and they play different genres of music every time I go there. Once I went there and they played a soothing French Rock genre and the next time a more Indie and rock genre. No matter what they play, the volume isn’t offensive, so if you don’t like that certain song you don’t necessarily have to listen to it. The workers are friendly and very helpful and overall very chill. The themes of Cosmic Coffee involve very cute and unique garden decor, twinkle lights, delicious smells, and the babbling of the brook right next to the seating.
When I went to Cosmic Coffee, I tried their Guava Flow, White Peppermint Mocha, Iced Latte, and Lemonade. The Guava Flow drink is an icy mixture of a guava slush and a matcha slush with a lemon on the rim. I added some tajin on the side of the cup so you could get that perfect blend of sweet and salty. I don’t particularly like the taste of matcha, however, in this drink the blend of guava and matcha is so refreshing and sweet. The lime adds that perfect tinge of citrus to round out the drink. I would rate this drink a 10/10 and it’s a perfect springtime and summer drink.
The White Peppermint Mocha is one of their most delicious coffees, and it tastes authentic. The coffee blend itself is deep and smooth, then the chocolate is nice and rich with a creamy and sweet whipped cream on top. I can tell that they hand-make their whipped cream because it tastes pure and unlike the whipped cream you get out of a can. It is so delicious and I would rate this drink a 10/10 as well, putting you in the mood for wintertime.
The Iced Latte is just coffee, milk, and a bit of sweetener. I love coffee and I drink it almost every day, however this blend of coffee sort of tastes like oats. I can drink it, however, I wouldn’t order it every time. It isn’t disgusting, it is just nothing special. Again, this is very individualistic and in my opinion the coffee isn’t as rich and bold as I would like it and more of a soft oaty aftertaste. This blend is a standard blend that I feel like I taste a lot at many different coffee shops such as Radio, Epoch Coffee, etc. I don’t typically like this blend so I’d rate it a 5/10.
The Lemonade is a yummy sweet iced and lemony refresher that anyone could enjoy. The lemonade was priced at 3 dollars which in my opinion is pretty cheap for a coffee shop. The service was great and the employees were very quick with their orders. The lemonade is just what I need after a day of activities. It was very refreshing and not too sour or tart. It also didn’t seem too sugary which was plus as well. I would for sure get it again and I recommend the lemonade as a drink option.
Along with the drinks, Cosmic Coffee provides opportunities to get delicious food which includes Le Roy and Lewis, Pueblo Viejo, and Tommy Want Wingy.. My personal favorite is the food truck, Tommy Want Wingy. A standard wing from somewhere like Wingstop or Pluckers are small-ish and they have meat that covers the whole bone and offers a wing or drum. However these aren’t your typical wings, and they make them into lollipop wings. A lollipop wing is where they push all the meat to the top and make the wing into a ball of meat at the end making it literally look like a lollipop. This is different from the normal, which allows for a fun experience and if you’re into food photography, these are perfect for it. There are copious Wing Combos, Garlic Tots and Fries, and Spicy Garlic Tots and fries, etc. I usually lean more towards a Teriyaki or Sweet and Spicy flavor rather than a Buffalo. So, I get the Sweet Chili flavor and it perfectly hits the spot every time, especially paired with ranch. The bite is juicy, crunchy and they aren’t shy with the sauce, so you know you’re in for a good bite. If you’re in the mood for something more spicy, don’t fret, they offer a variety of flavors and spice levels that could match your personal preference. These wings honestly beat any other wings that I’ve tried in Austin, and they taste authentic. Sometimes a restaurant will offer “wings” however when you eat it, it just seems off or fake. With Tommy Want Wingy, you know what the chicken you’re eating is real chicken.
The only real downside would be the price demographic and the drive. Yes, I would 100% recommend this place to anybody wanting a tasty drink and a salty meal. However, since most teens have a limited amount of funds, this place is only really for an outing type of day instead of a regular visit, if you want food and drinks. Although the drinks themselves are pretty affordable, prices range from $3.50-$6.00. However, the food can get quite pricey where a meal from Le Roy and Lewis ranges from $10-$43, a meal from Pueblo Viejo $2.55-$15.00 ( which isn’t that bad), and $8.00-$200.00 from Tommy Want Wingy.
I would recommend Cosmic Coffee +Beer Garden because not only are the food and drinks good, but the atmosphere encapsulates me guaranteeing a good visit. I usually go here with my dad and we have the best conversations that can last for hours. Not only because of my relationship with him, but because the vibe is so comfortable, I never feel pushed or awkward wanting to leave. Cosmic Coffee is a staple in Austin and you should stop by.
