Should homework still exist?
December 13, 2021
This topic has been going around for awhile now but really nothing has been done about it. Homework can really affect kids/teens. A lot of kids have events after school like sports or clubs and it’s hard to fit homework in their schedule.
Homework is too much, kids already spend most of their day at school then when they get home they have to do more. And how do they fit in family time? A lot of parents work on the weekends, so after school is their time to connect with parents. I believe that homework should no longer exist.
Homework can cause many problems, such as kids not getting as much sleep as they need to function throughout the day. Sleep researchers suggest that a teenager needs between eight to 10 hours of sleep every night. Most teenagers only get about 6.5-7.5 hours sleep per night. Sleep is super important in your life.
Some of the most serious problems associated with not getting enough sleep are high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack, heart failure or stroke, obesity, depression, slow thinking, reduced attention span, poor memory, risky decision-making, lack of energy, mood changes like feeling stressed, anxiety or irritability. All of these things can have major effects on how children do in school. Teens who are struggling with depression often find themselves struggling in school. The symptoms of depression can directly interfere with learning and work completion.
I understand how you can work on school after class like not finishing your work or when a project is due soon. But just assigning work at home is ridiculous because there’s no point kids can just cheat at home or call their friends who have already done it. You can’t stop cheating when they’re doing it with no supervision at their own home.
If too many kids are falling behind on work, there should just be a catch up day, where kids just work on things that were already due but did not get to finish them yet. And it will give teachers a day to catch up on grading.
Homework is too much for teens and kids, there is no point. It should no longer be required. All it does is cause unnecessary stress for students and teachers.
