The film industry right now
December 2, 2021
These past few years have led to the film industry being riddled with hurdle after hurdle, continuously slamming down on the actors, directors, and film crew trying their hardest to keep the industry alive.
A major struggle the industry has to deal with is adjusting to new safety protocols and regulations. With movie theaters closing across the country and a staff shortage across the board, the film industry has been undergoing massive financial problems. Hundreds of movies were shelved or pushed back just before filming, such as Matt Reeves’ The Batman, Dune, and Top Gun: Maverick.
As movie goers were forced into their homes in April of 2020, they had to adjust to watching their favorite movies and TV shows in different ways. With a rise in movie theaters closing, the experience of watching movies in a theater hasn’t been an option.
As the sun sets on 2022, movie theaters have been opening back up with pretty much all of them now open and with them, new problems arise such as rise in film-making costs, and a tragedy that occurred on set with of course many other issues.
According to purely streamonomics’ research, “global spending on developing and licensing new entertainment content increased by 16.4% in 2020 to $220.2 billion, and is predicted to rise to $250 billion in 2021 and even higher in 2022”. Popular films cost millions of dollars just to produce a single film. The Marvel movie “Black Widow” budget was around 200 million. With the film coming out in 2021 and with most theaters open, the movie is making a great profit that is increasing to this day (over 370 million).
Having the biggest hit “Squid game” the creator Hwang Dong-hyuk was not getting paid as much as you would think. With the film series having only a $21 million budget and the whopping worth of $900 million to Netflix Hwang says “It’s not like Netflix is paying me a bonus” according to marketwatch.com. As well as the hit series is predicted to have a season 2. It’s clear to see the fans are ready for more games.
The film industry can also be considered dangerous apparently. Being in the film industry means long, sometimes overnight hours and it can be exhausting. That is only one of the factors, there are also different protocols and safety precautions that must be done. Mr. Baldwin, an Emmy Award-winning actor, has had a long career in movies, plays, and television. In such a rare situation when his character needed a gun in a certain scene. The trigger was pulled and ended up killing the film’s director of photography, Halyna Hutchins, 42, who was shot in the chest and rushed to the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque and later passed away. This raises new questions about the safety of firearms being on set.
The Film Industry is always changing and evolving with new things happening every day.
With all it is made up from, at the film industry’s core is the heart and passion of the workers on and off set that power through it everyday.
