Simone Biles and about 160 more women have struggled with sexual abuse in the US gymnastics industry. In 2018, Simone Biles came forward claiming sexual abuse at the hands of Larry Nassar, the team doctor of the US women’s national gymnastics team.

Even though gymnasts reported Larry Nassar’s abuse to the FBI in 2015, he went along and still worked and treated students at Michigan State University until 2016. Simone Biles and about 160 more women have struggled with sexual abuse in the US gymnastics industry. In 2018, Simone Biles came forward claiming sexual abuse at the hands of Larry Nassar, the team doctor of the US women’s national gymnastics team. On September 15, 2021 Biles, along with former teammates Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney testified before the Senate about the abuse they all suffered.  The senate committee is tasked with examining the FBI’s investigation into the abuse.

The sexual abuse that was ignored for so many years in the gymnastics industry is utterly disgusting. Simone Biles bravely pushed back against a failed system. I believe the FBI should have done their job and taken the reported assaults seriously. Instead, the FBI’s handling of the case added more hurt to an already traumatic situation. Nassar continued to sexually abuse many more women and walk free. Based on the way the FBI and the gymnastics industry ignored the issue, Simone Biles is left with years of trauma and pain.

A justice department general report revealed the mishandling the FBI had with this case. The report showed that many of the sexual assaults were reported to the FBI in 2015 but Nassar continued to treat gymnasts at Michigan State University, a high school and a gymnastics club until September 2016.

Simone Biles dealt with a tremendous amount of trauma she endured from her sexual abuse and she is still coping with it today. “I was super depressed, I didn’t want to leave my room and I didn’t want to go anywhere and I kind of just shut everyone out” is what Biles said in an interview on the Today Show. Simone Biles continues to fight her mental health struggles, as the world witnessed at the Tokyo olympics.

Many of the victims tried to report their assault from Larry Nassar to the FBI and some of their other teammates but they were quickly shut down. “What is the point of reporting abuse if our own FBI agents are going to take it upon themselves to bury that report in a drawer.” Former gymnast McKayla Maroney said at the senate committee hearing on Wednesday September 15.

The main flaw in the case was in the system. If the FBI and the gymnastics industry just took these assaults seriously and listened to the survivors there would be a lot less hurt and there would be some justice for all of these victims.

Larry Nassar is now serving up to 175 years in prison, so justice has finally been served. However the timing of this was greatly affected by the FBIs casual approach to this investigation which in turn stretched the pain and trauma for Simone and countless other victims. Simone Biles is a very brave woman who managed to stay strong and has changed the gymnastic industry for the better.
