The events of 2020 have provided a well overdue fashion refresh. This fresh breath of air within the teenage fashion industry has been a major callback to the fashion of the 1990s.

The reimagination of the 90s has created a new perspective of teenage fashion. This fashion awakening, unfortunately, has its negatives as 2020 definitely hasn’t been perfect.

The most universal trend that happens to be growing it its popularity is mom jeans and straight jeans. The previous skinny jeans era has come to an end as mom jeans give a new silhouette that is non-constricting and more comfortable in general. Mom jeans were given their popularity for their high waist and their ability to make any body type look flattering without the awkwardness of skinny jeans. Between 2020 and 2019 the popularity of skinny jeans has been completely diminished as the fad for mom jeans and straight jeans grows exponentially.

Another comeback straight from the 90s is the miniskirt. Gaining its popularity in August of 2020, the miniskirt is commonly paired with the oversized crew neck sweater. This is personally one of my absolute favorite trends this year. The different textures of miniskirts give a special new shape when it comes to wearing streetwear. The skirt, crewneck combination is something new and different in 2020 as last year skirts felt like a fashion disaster.

One of my least favorite trends is the bike shorts fad, the way that it is styled is just not very fashionable and is nearly impossible to style it correctly. The tight-fitting bottom is just not appealing when styled with an oversized top. Most of the time the imbalance of having a large top and small bottoms like a skirt or jeans is not as dramatic, but with bike shorts it’s very difficult to make that imbalance look proportional.

Many trends come in new forms of accessories. Unfortunately with good comes bad, clear bags are making appearances and clustering outfits. The contents inside of clear bags become a statement that draws your attention away from what you are wearing. The new spotlight for your outfit makes the rest of your look seem cluttered and disorganized. The innermost portions of my bag should not be something that everyone should wanna look at. Personally, it’s just not a cute look when it comes to trends and accessories. There are so many other cute options that you could pick from before you chose to wear a clear bag.

As of now if you were to search up a “bag” on the internet the first thing that would show up is a baguette-style handbag with a short handle designed to be worn along the shoulder and a wide interior portion to hold all of your necessities. It is no brainer that these bags would become popular with their dainty appearance that perfectly matches all of the other trends of this year.

Throughout this wild year, the teenage fashion industry was able to have a new breakthrough and strives to redefine fashion for girls making it about comfort and accessibility. Popular clothes now come from thrift stores and 90s throwbacks make fashion go from repetitive to reformative.
