Texas outlasts West Virginia
November 9, 2020
Texas got an important victory over West Virginia in a fairly low-scoring 17-13 game. Quarterback Sam Ehlinger led the way for Texas with 184 passing yards and 2 touchdowns, as well as 39 rushing yards. Bijan Robinson was the lead runner for Texas, finishing the game with 113 yards. Jake Smith (3 rec, 59 yards, 1 TD) and Brennan Eagles (4 rec, 43 yards, 1 TD) were Ehlinger’s main targets. Bijan Robinson played an important role in this game, proving that he can be a lead running back for Texas, as Texas has struggled to find a lead running back this season. The Texas defense, which has been fairly week for most of the season, stepped up in this game. Texas was able to hold West Virginia to 13 points and prevented West Virginia from converting 2 crucial 4th-and-1 attempts in the 4th quarter. At 5-2, Texas still has a chance to make it to the Big 12 championship and will need to win out the rest of their games. The battle for the leader of the Big 12 is currently a toss-up between Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, and Texas, all with either only 1 or 2 losses. Texas has 3 games left on the schedule, including favorable road matchups against Kansas and Kansas State and a big home game against Iowa State after Thanksgiving (November 27th). It is highly unlikely that Texas will have a shot at making the playoffs, as they already have 2 losses. Plus, it is difficult to predict how Texas would fare against the elite programs like Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, and Notre Dame. A current projection according to ESPN sports writers is Texas going to the Academy Sports+Outdoors Texas bowl against either Arkansas or LSU. However, if Texas is able to win out and win the Big 12 championship, they could go to a major bowl game such as the Cotton Bowl. This is a very important year for head coach Tom Herman, as it is rumored that he’s on the hot seat as Texas head coach after a highly disappointing season last year. However, if Texas is able to make it to a major bowl game and win, Herman’s job should be safe.
