On Wednesday, February 26th, Austin ISD shared a media report to families about the Coronavirus (COVID-19). While no cases have been suspected among the Austin community, AISD, as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), want to ensure the safety of students. Public health officials do believe the risk to the school community is low at this time, however, they are closely monitoring the situation and will provide more information as it becomes available.

If any changes to school operations are to be made, they will be done so with guidance from the CDC and local health officials, along with guidance and direction from the authorities at TEA ad region 13.

Health officials are  recommending local communities and school to take steps to protect against coronavirus:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 30 seconds. If soap and water are not available. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose, mouth with unwashed hands
  • Void close contact with people who are sick
  • Stay home when sick
  • Cover the mouth and nose with the inside of the elbow when coughing or sneezing
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces

This is important not just to help prevent the spread of coronavirus, but to help prevent the spread of other infections that can lead to student illness and absences.
