New and improved BOSS center
October 1, 2019
Freshman have little time to adjust to the new experience of high school which can sometimes contribute to them not doing their work, but they now have the opportunity to receive extra help from the BOSS Center. The Bowie On-Site Support Center is now available on Campus in Room A216 Monday-Friday during all periods of the day for teachers who teach English I, World Geography, Algebra I, Biology, Spanish I, French I, and ASL I to send students during the last hour of class.
The purpose of the Bowie On-SIte Support (BOSS) Center is to serve as an academic intervention for freshmen in academic level classes and give support to freshmen in their core classes that are struggling with completing their homework. The center is run by Jody Barrett, and she will work with the students to evaluate multiple possibilities for why the student isn’t completing their assigned work and receive support to creating good habits for the future.
“The Students could be struggling with personal issues or things of that nature, that is not necessarily an academic issue,” Barrett said. “This is not an academic center, this is a center where I can give individual attention to the students who come in and see why it is they’re not doing their work”
Students can come to the center multiple times if their teacher feel it is needed to further their academic abilities. As the students are evaluated and receive support, Barrett may monitor grades, counsel students, provide coaching on positive behaviors towards education, and/or contact counselors and administrators regarding concerns.
“Students should leave the BOSS Center feeling confident and feel like they are ready to get back into their classroom with a better understanding of what it is that is asked of them”
To send students teachers must fill out a pass for the student that indicates whether the student needs to return to the classroom by a certain time, but if the teacher anticipates the student staying at the center for the remainder of class then the student should bring all of their materials. Once the students arrive with their assigned work and explicit instructions from their teachers then they’re evaluated and helped by Barrett.
